Key Games Week 8 Saturday 18 October 2013
No.22 Florida (4-2, 3-1 SEC) at No.14 Missouri (6-0, 2-0 SEC) Faurot Field, Columbia
The Gators come in to this one after a poor showing on the road at No.6 LSU in a low scoring game. The visitors have the 3rd best defence overall but their offense languish in the rankings at 91st.
QB Tyler Murphy has 645 yards for 1 pick and 7 sacks with 3 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns going into week 8. Matt Jones leads with the rush, 79 carries for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Three wide receivers lead by Solomon Patton (380 yards) all have receiving yards over 300. Productivity on the offense will have to improve against an inform Missouri.
Missouri are putting plenty of points on the board, 38 is their lowest total against Toledo in week 2. Head coach Gary Pinkel will want to keep his players feet on the ground in this top 25 clash.
QB James Franklin is absent and Maty Mauk will deputise behind centre. The freshman is yet to score a touchdown this season, he has played 3 games for 41 yards and two sacks. The Tigers have a good running game lead by Russell Hansbrough. WR L’Damian Washington has 29 catches for 455 yards and 7 touchdown.
The Gators will be happier knowing that James Franklin will not be playing but their tight defense are going to have their work cut out against a ruthless Tigers offense.
No.24 Auburn (5-1, 3-1 SEC) at No.7 Texas A&M (5-1, 2-1 SEC) Kyle Field, Texas
It’s the Tigers turn this week to deal with the threat of Aggies QB Johnny Manziel. The Tigers have their own prospect in Nick Marshall. Auburn routed Western Carolina 62-3 last week but this weeks opponents are in a different class.
RB Tre Mason (515 yards) and WR Sammie Coates (319 yards) are capable go to weapons for Marshall. They will have to make every opportunity count with the football the best chance to stay in the game.
The Auburn defense has not given up any more than 24 points in any one game. That statistic is more than likely going to change this week.
The Aggies don’t need any real introductions, they come into this one after a narrow win 41-38 win over Ole Miss last time out. Heisman trophy candidate Johnny Manziel is a pretty special talent. 1835 yards with a completion rate of 73.2% for 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Manziel has been sacked just 5 times this season. Despite a loss to Alabama they still put 42 points on the board.
The Aggies defense can be breached, they gave up 38 points last week and 33 points the week before. Their Aggies strength lies with their formidable offense.
This has the makings of an excellent football game, save the comfort breaks for the two minute warning and HT. You don’t want to miss this.
No.9 UCLA (5-0, 2-0 PAC 12 Sth) at No.13 (5-1, 3-1 PAC 12 North) Stanford Stadium, California
The Bruins arrive in Stanford defending an unbeaten start to the season. Stanford must pick themselves up after a defeat on the road at UTAH.
QB Brett Hundley has thrown for 1469 yards this season with 12 touchdowns. Despite having the 5th best defense in NCAA Football, they can be slow starters giving away too many penalties. RB Jordan James is listed as doubtful for Saturday, he leads with 463 yards rushing. WR Shaquelle Evans has 20 catches for 289 receiving yards with 4 touchdowns. The visitors will look to stretch the Stanford defense in the same way UTAH did last week.
Stanford can not really afford to lose another game in what is going to be a tough test for both teams. QB Kevin Hogan has thrown for 1178 yards with 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. RB Tyler Gaffney and WR Montgomery both have over 500 yards respectively.
Stanford head coach David Shaw will want his defence to make some plays and turn the football over in order to get his offense back on the field and scoring points. Pressure is on the home team to get the win and avoid two straight defeats.
This game could well finish as a close scoring game as two evenly matched teams go head to head in week 8.
