For many years I was never a fan of the CFL, I didn't like the 3 downs system they played and looked at it from the standpoint that it was a second rate league with no decent players or teams... this was until the now sadly departed ESPN America started showing it last season.
I watched a few games just to have football on when there was nothing else worth watching and I saw that my perception of the game "up north" was nothing like I envisioned it. Now I'm not saying I agree with all the rules in the league and there are some odd ones but when you sit and just watch it, it is a very fun league to watch and boy is it fast.
I started watching it on a more regular basis this season (I won't state the means in which I watch but you can probably guess ) and really got into it and wondered how some of these guys weren't in the NFL... until I looked them up and found that they had indeed played or been a part of several teams before heading to play up north.
The one major problem I have with the league is the lack of teams, there are 8!
This leads to a problem that Scottish soccer (this is a forum about proper football after all and soccer is actually the games correct name) has in that each team plays each other way too many times in the regular season & then you have the semi finals and the Grey Cup Final. The CFL season is 19 weeks long and for me with the amount of teams that play in it is too long.
A 19 week season would be fine if it had more teams and you didn't have to watch 2 teams play each a possible 9 odd times a year. If the league can get more teams in to sort this issue out (they have an expansion team coming in next year to make it a 9 team league) then I believe the CFL could really take off outside of its country of origin and would keep me watching every week. The 3 or so weeks I watched every game every week and after that period I got bored of seeing the same teams play each other, so I decided to stop and wait for the Grey Cup final to watch my next CFL game.
I would recommend watching the CFL if you can get a feed or indeed download it, since it is a fun take on the great game of football.
