Within 5 minutes of the start of the week 6 game at Soldier Field, Eli Manning threw two interceptions including a pick six. The torrid start to the season continues for the Big Blue. No one can question Manning's ability. He has been there and done it but another loss added the fact the he turned the ball over multiple times adds to the pressure and media scrutiny that both he and his franchise are under right now.
It's easy to sit here in hindsight and say Manning should have done this and that but all the facts should be laid down on the table before making judgement on him. Only Eli Manning knows if his current mental state is right to play elite football.
Coach Coughlin is caught in a catch 22 right now. Maybe it is a time for Curtis Painter to come in behind centre. If Painter comes in and shores things up on the offence then it's productivity for the Giants. It's then up to Eli Manning to win his place back in the starting line up. If Painter does not produce goods then no one can say the head coach didn't try and mix things up. The die hards in New York may shout in Manning's defence, stick with the guy that brought us Championships. Coughlin may chose to show loyalty and faith in his starting QB. It's food for thought but a choice that coaches get paid to make.
Manning threw to WR Rueben Randle for a second Giants TD. That may give the veteran some comfort in what has been another tough week. This may not be enough for some who will be in disbelief at what they are seeing on the football field. Whether Coughlin makes the call to sit Manning in order to move on to plan B remains to be seen. Only the Giants head coach can make that decision. People may be pointing the finger at the Giants head coach and saying it's time to retire at the end of the season. Whether the Giants go 0-16 or 3-13, the 0-6 start will not be what Coach Coughlin will want to be remembered for.
People may have seen this coming but that does not matter to the Giants. They are professionals just like the other 31 teams in the league and they will be working hard to put the kinetics of their offence on the right track. It's just another part of what is turning out to be a fascinating season in the NFL.
