Week 5 concludes with the New York Jets (2-2) visiting the Georgia Dome to take on the Atlanta Falcons (1-3).
The Jets are up and down this season as they try and sort out their problems at QB. Rookie QB Geno Smith is now in the spotlight for the Jets. He has thrown 1090 yards with 3 passing TD's and 1 rushing TD. Smith has been picked 8 times and has been sacked 14 times this season. Last week the rookie had two fumbles and two interceptions. WR Santonio Holmes is out of this one (hamstring). Second year WR Stephen Hill (Ohio State) is listed as probable (concussion). Hill has the second most reception yards behind Holmes with 233 and 1 TD. RB Bilal Powell leads the Jets offence in rushing with 292 yards and 1 TD. RB Chris Ivory is listed as probable (hamstring).
DE Muhammad Wilkerson has 3.0 sacks this season. ILB DeMario Davis has the most tackles in the Jets defence including 1 sack. No team allows shorter drives than the Jets. Gang Green rank first in fewest plays per drive, fewest yards allowed per drive (stats for four games). The defensive line will be hoping that they are not on the field of play as much in tonight.
Falcons head coach Mike Smith will be looking to avoid a third straight defeat as the Falcons go in search of their second win of the season. QB Matt Ryan has thrown for 1330 yards averaging 316 yards a game with 8 passing TD's, 3 interceptions and 7 sacks. Atlanta have the 4th worst rushing record in the league with 328 yards (82/game) which is lead by Jacquizz Rodgers with 134 at 3.5 yards per carry. Ryan has some capable weapons with WR Julio Jones and TE Tony Gonzales who have 2 and 3 passing TD's respectively. The Jets CB's are going to have to play smart to cover them. Julio Jones is listed as questionable (knee).
Atlanta have given up just under 28 points per game so far, they will be aware of the number of times that the Jets have turned the football over. 4th year CB Robert McClain has 29 combined tackles this season and will be looking to hit Geno Smith to add to his solitary sack. Veteran DE Osi Umenyiora leads with 2.5 sacks. Umenyiora also has an interception this year.
This fixture may not be everyones pick of the week. Both teams are struggling for some early season rhythm. If Matt Ryan can pick out his wide men in the passing channels they may edge this one with home advantage on their side. The Jets will be looking to do much better with the football. Geno Smith will not want to repeat his behind the back horror show from last week.
Key Men
Jets - Geno Smith. The Jets defence are doing their job, it's now time for the offensive line to do the same.
Falcons - Tony Gonzales. With below average rushing numbers Matt Ryan may look to use his passing game to stretch the Jets downfield.
